DR RUBEN MANOHARA
Dr Ruben is a firm advocate for an active lifestyle. During his school days, he won medals in various team sports such as rugby and sailing. In his university days, he would visit the gym on the regular and enjoy many outdoor sports like wakeboarding and scuba diving. Now, as a busy father of two exuberant young boys, Dr Ruben stays fit by regular running and resistance exercise. As such, he can relate to the various ailments that his patients may present with, from sport-specific injuries to repetitive stress injuries from the gym to just plain ageing.
Dr Ruben Manohara is a fellowship-trained consultant orthopaedic surgeon. His area of speciality includes sports injuries of the upper limb, as well as general orthopaedic trauma. He treats a wide range of injuries, including fractures affecting the shoulder, elbow, hip, knee and ankle. Dr Ruben works closely with his patients to develop personalised rehabilitation plans to help them return to their sport or everyday life as soon as possible.
Dr Ruben graduated from the NUS Faculty of Medicine with a Bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery (MBBS) in 2004. He then went on to complete his orthopaedic postgraduate surgical training in Singapore. Upon completion of his specialist training, he received the NUHS Academic Medicine Development Award. He then went on to complete a one-year clinical fellowship at the prestigious Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, United Kingdom. There, he gained proficiency in complex trauma, sports injuries, arthroscopy and joint replacement surgery of the upper limb.
Prior to joining The Shoulder l Elbow Orthopaedic group, Dr Ruben had worked in the public sector for 16 years. While at the National University Hospital’s Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr Ruben was a Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon with both the Shoulder & Elbow Division, as well as the Musculoskeletal Trauma Division. Using minimally invasive approaches and cutting- edge surgical techniques, Dr Ruben strives to improve his patients’ outcomes with shorter hospital stays, faster recovery and better clinical results. He was also part of the NUHS hip fracture team that had won a Ministry of Health (MOH) Value-Driven Outcomes Excellence award in 2019.
Dr Ruben is also very committed to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education in Singapore and the region. As an appointed Assistant Professor with the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, National University of Singapore (NUS), he was responsible for teaching and assessing medical students, as well as postgraduate orthopaedic residents. As an active member of AO Trauma, the Singapore Shoulder and Elbow Society and various other educational bodies, he is regularly invited to give lectures and to conduct surgical courses, both locally and in the Asia- Pacific region, on upper limb trauma, shoulder and elbow arthroplasty and shoulder arthroscopy. In the field of research, Dr Ruben has numerous publications in international peer-reviewed journals, he has given multiple oral presentations at various scientific meetings, and he has also contributed a chapter in an orthopaedic basics science book.
Dr Ruben firmly believes in treating patients, not their scans. He provides holistic, individually- tailored and evidence-based care to his patients. He has experience treating both the young and the young-at-heart; his goal is to help them achieve their needs in a manner comfortable to them. Whether it is bouncing back from a significant injury, returning to high-level competitive sports, or even something as simple as being able to carry their grandchildren, to raise their arms overhead or behind their backs, or be able to sleep peacefully, without painful interruption. Dr Ruben does this by empowering them with the relevant knowledge of their condition and the evidence behind all the available treatment options out there, before making a joint management plan together.
When not busy treating his patients, Dr Ruben enjoys music, sports, food and travelling; but his family remains his greatest passion.
